The Concerns We Hear Most

The Concerns We Hear MostConcerns are totally normal. When it comes to your home and your property in general, we at Restumping Melbourne expect them. If you didn’t have some sort of concern about the foundation of your home – which we take painstaking efforts to support – then we wouldn’t be the most prolific company in the area (our sentiment included) at doing the work that we do – restumping, reblocking and underpinning your homes.

A lot of people are concerned about embarking on home renovation projects for multiple reasons and while we cover individual concerns on a regular basis, we noticed that trend recently. Because we love the Restumping Melbourne blog so much and know what a wonderful all-encompassing resource it is, it seemed like an easy reach to combine many of the calls/emails/conversations/etc. that we receive all the time. That’s right, you can reach us in all sorts of different ways, we don’t mind which one. We’ll always respond ASAP and with pleasure. Here are some of the questions and concerns that we get the most:

How long is the work going to take?

Unfortunate answer to start with, but totally up-in-the-air. The reason we say this is that the scope of work determines how long we’ll be in your home. That said, the duration will always be as short as possible. It’s our personal goal to ensure that we’re causing the shortest amount of interference in your day-to-day life and that means that time is of the essence, no matter what our scope of work is.

What’s this going to cost me?

Hey, we get it, home renovations get a bad reputation, no matter how important they are. But, that’s what’s important. They’re important. There are home renovations that are simply fun to complete, but there are most that are truly necessary to not only optimize the quality and the curb appeal of your current state of home. We like to think that the work that the Restumping Melbourne team does to restore, reinforce or even fix the foundation of your home falls in the latter, but we do more than that. We make sure that your home will be around for decades to come. That’s not to say that we will try and escalate prices, based on the value of our work. In fact, we pride ourselves on remaining some of the most cost-effective vendors in this space. All you have to do is give us a call and we’ll have an honest and transparent conversation about the rates that we can give you.

What’s the point?

We get it. There are the jobs around the house that you depend on experts for where you’re thinking, “I’ve never even heard of restumping!” Well, let us tell you. When you properly reinforce the foundation of your home, you’re tackling problems like cracks in the walls and ceilings, any excess moisture and even sloping walls. All of these can seem like short-term problems, but they’ll build up over time.

Working with Local Companies

Working with Local CompaniesYou have a lot of options when it comes to the vendors and contractors that you work with, no matter what project you’re about to embark on. You may be reinforcing the foundation of your home, putting a pool in the backyard, painting an interior wall or adding updated lighting to a room.

The great thing is – you have options; you could easily get on the internet, type in whatever you’re looking for, and have it delivered to you in a box within a week. Restumping Melbourne is all about convenience. We’ve shaped our business model time and time again to put you – our customers – first. But we know that there’s a lot of give and take when it comes to creating a really positive experience for you. So, while convenience can be a major benefit, we never want the quality to be a trade-off.

And that’s why we love being a local company. We believe in putting local companies first, ourselves included. We’ve seen a major uptick in support of small businesses and local companies all over the globe and it’s been heartwarming and inspiring – especially when we need news like this the most. There are many additional benefits, including these:

  • You’re putting money right back into your local community. This is money that you can see, the return on investment is found on your main street, in your shopping areas, at your area schools and even in the events that you hold with your neighbours. There’s an increased sense of pride and transparency when you feel good about making a purchase or hiring a contractor, knowing that the benefits are coming right back to you.
  • We get to know you on a more personal level. Yes, if you’re working with a chain, a franchise or a national company, they have more money to invest in technology and can reply via email or take phone calls. But we’re old school in the sense that we appreciate in-person meetings when we can and love to follow-up with our customers to ensure that every part of the process met and exceeded standards.
  • Timelines can be expedited. When we’re right nearby, you know where to find us – if you have questions, changes, comments or updates. If we arrive on a job site to survey and learn that the materials that we have on hand are completely wrong, it’s a quick trip back to our home base and one that we’re always happy to make. Reinforcing the foundation of your home using our premier restumping, reblocking and underpinning solutions is no easy feat and nothing to make light of. These are jobs that should be done right, and they should be done with both speed and care.

Shopping local doesn’t end with your contracting services or even anything related to your home, it extends far beyond that and all it takes is a few searches to discover which businesses you can check out now.

Company Update

Company UpdateCan you believe that we’re MORE than halfway through the 2020 year? We say this every year. In fact, we say it more often than just once a year – whether time is moving at the speed of a snail or if it’s one of those years where you blink and have no idea where time has gone. So far, in summary, the Restumping Melbourne team will call this 365 a little bit of both. And honestly, one that we can’t wait to be done with.

That’s not to say that we haven’t loved every minute of working with our teammates, our vendor partners and our customers, but that whole pandemic thing has really impeded us in a way that we didn’t anticipate on any front.

We will never stop aiming to elevate our commitment to you and what successful relationship is successful without genuine, honest and frequent conversation? We know that a lot of companies (around the globe) have had to go dark, have had to take a break, or have even had to go out of business. Luckily, that’s not the case with us. But, there’s a weird domino effect here, in that when bad things happen to companies, customers easily lose trust in an industry at-large. We’re here to stop that as a general goal, but the objective today is to simply remind you where we are as a company right now and how we can help you.

Three words – (well, technically two words and a contraction) we’re still here. We’re still standing and we’re still your biggest allies when it comes to reinforcing the foundation of your home. Just because any sort of event happens, doesn’t mean that the foundation of your home decides to properly behave. That would be nice, but actually – exponentially more time spent at home means that you’re most likely contributing to the signs and symptoms of foundation movement and damage. Think about it – a family of four may be inclined to take four showers a day. They also may be inclined to be slightly less enthusiastic about airing out moist places or circulating air. This can quickly become both a catalyst and a symptom of foundation damage when you have excess moisture that gathers.

Don’t be scared – the Restumping Melbourne team has your back. We’re still offering many of the services, but we’re doing so in a way that keeps you and yours safe. It’s always been our commitment to have as little impact as possible to your household and daily routines when we complete any sort of work. That means that we work with you to determine when and who will be home if there are ways or a necessity to complete the work with you and yours out of the home and how quickly we can get you back to normal. Normal is actually a poor word – get you back to a home that is now structurally sound and more comfortable than ever.

Here we go, 2020 – let’s finish out strong!

How We Got Here

How We Got HereEvery business journey is interesting and unique. Our journeys tell the stories of our struggles and triumphs, the lessons that we’ve learned and the amazing community of teammates and customers that we continue to amass along the way. Think of some great examples… Apple is the first that comes to mind. Steve Jobs was undoubtedly smart and promising, but he had to deal with the politics of everyone around him, ultimately leading him to have to leave the business for a while. That one ended up working out alright; after all, how many of us own iPhones or Apple products these days? There are others that haven’t fared so well, but that’s not an issue you’ll ever have to worry about here.

As you probably assume, the Restumping Melbourne team is no different than Apple in some respects. We started with a simple idea – that we wanted to reinforce your foundations and do so, so that you would never have to go through the process again… at least not for a very long time. Restumping, reblocking, underpinning – we do it all, and we do it well.

We do it well because there are a few different ways that we got here. Let’s share some of the details:

  • We believe in our products. We believe in the products that we started with and we believe in the products that are newly available in the industry. We would never share a product with you that we wouldn’t use on our own properties. And that will always be the case.
  • We do not mind putting in a hard day’s work. Or a hard night’s work for that matter. Reinforcing the foundation of your home is no joke, and anyone that impacts your home should take it very seriously. While we always aim to work around your schedule, know that your schedule should always work around us.
  • We want to learn. We talk about this all of the time on the blog. Complacency is the greatest enemy of improvement and enhancement – two things that we value heavily at Restumping Homes. We don’t see our business as a “check off” or a place where we can get to where we believe that we really know everything. We never will. And we don’t want to. But, part of our enthusiasm and passion is just that – that we want to learn. We have conversations with each other every day. We read all of the associated materials about your dream home. And we go to all of the events possible. We want to touch, feel and learn about materials and processes that will only make your life easier.
  • We will never stop trying. That’s the bottom line. Constructive criticism is our friend and we will always appreciate it. Bring it on – the complaints, the compliments, all of the above. The Restumping Melbourne team will always be here to keep making your home better and better.

What the Environment of Construction Looks Like

What the Environment of Construction Looks LikeNo, we’re not talking about the road or the environment in which construction takes place physically. We’re talking about the past, the current and the future, before we know that construction is in a good place. Restumping Melbourne is a company that is dedicated to ensuring that the environment that we create is one that’s diverse, and ever-growing.

So, let’s look at the support. Let’s look at who is being integrated into the current work environment and why.

We’ve already heard about the #metoo movement. It’s no joke, and no question that it’s an important issue around women in the workplace. You know what the great thing is? Women in the workplace are more prevalent than ever, and especially with the team at Restumping Melbourne. In fact, we celebrate them. On a daily basis, and today – that means that we discuss their role in construction not only here, but around the globe. Read on for more information:

Here are some fun stats –

Just in the UK alone – let alone the other countries around the world, the Construction Industry Training Board, also known as CITB, female employees are a slim 14.5 percent population of construction workers.

Even better, women in manual trades are only two percent.

Remember the recession, yes – women in these areas did flourish during this time… in fact, up to 18 percent around the world. But while one may always be on the horizon, this one is a long time ago.

Here’s a current statistic, thanks to Refinery29, “According to the UK’s Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), only 14.5% of construction workers are female.”

Heads up – their article is one to check out. It chronicles some of the best women in the business and how exactly they’re smashing the glass ceiling for women in the construction industry. Check out more information here.

Enough about that. What can we do? What are the best ways to diversify the landscape of those that are participating and creating change in the construction industry? It’s easy enough to put your name on something and to say that you want to create change, but that’s not enough. Here are our best practices and ideas:

  • Attend as many talent recruiting events as possible. They’re the best way to determine the best and the brightest of the future – and more often than not, those are women.
  • Do your research. If you work in the construction industry, or if you are looking to get into it, take a gander at the different businesses around you, and what they’re looking for. Look at their values, look at the population of employees and look at the gaps in which you want to slot your best offerings.
  • Finally, show up. If you’re a woman in construction, we want to hear from you. We’re pretty sure that you have something to bring to the game and that other companies around us feel the exact same way.

With all of the above, reach out! Questions? Comments? The Restumping Melbourne team can’t wait to hear from you.

A Day in the Life at Restumping Melbourne

A Day in the Life at Restumping MelbourneWe get this question all the time. More and more in fact. It’s a huge testament to the work that we’ve put into the last few decades of our passion here, and you better believe that there is far more to come. But today on the blog, our team at Restumping Melbourne is celebrating the work that’s been completed and our never-wavering sense of urgency to continue to be the best! Why else do you think that we started this blog? We knew that there was an appetite to showcase why you choose us to reinforce the foundation of your homes and equally as importantly – to explain how and why. There’s a simple answer all around. People.

Yes, you come first. You will always be our valued community of friends, not customers. But one of the reasons that we like you so much, is that you care just as much about us. You have questions, you have comments, and the biggest one tends to be – what on earth does your job entail?

We thought we’d have some fun with this one. Read on for a day-in-the-life of a Restumping Melbourne employee.

6:00 a.m.: yes, this is the standard wake-up time, if not sooner. After a hearty breakfast, we’re on the road. Depending on the season and depending on your needs, this may be the best time to show up, get any sort of work started, and not disrupt your day. Of course, that being said, we’re flexible and can show up any time that works the best for you.

8:00 a.m.: If we’re not immediately at your home for a job, it’s likely that we’re at the home office, scheming about the best ways to help you. Someone may have found an amazing new sustainable material for the posts in your foundation and someone may have heard feedback that a certain process didn’t work its best in a specific area around; either way, it’s all about the brainstorming and camaraderie.

All day long: You can’t put a timeframe on this one, because once we get going… we get going. We’re on the phone with current and prospective customers, we’re doing site checks to discern if you need restumping support and how, we’re continuing the conversation to ensure that you’re as happy as possible with the work that’s been completed and we’re celebrating each other’s wins. We’re only as strong as our weakest teammate and it’s a true honour to say that we don’t have any of those around here.

End of day: What on earth is that? All jokes aside, here at Restumping Melbourne, we value work-life balance AND put you first at the same time. Shocking, right? You’re always guaranteed that we’re giving you our 124 percent, and that you’re represented by a company that loves our families, each other and what we do.

Sappy enough? Send us some questions or comments. We’re excited to hear from and work with you.

The Halfway Point

The Halfway PointWhen you’re halfway through the year, there’s no better time to check and adjust with your customers. Not just your customers, but your teammates. We know that we’re a little bit past that in 2019, but hey – the seasons can be slow, and so can we. The team at Restumping Melbourne likes to take the time to do things right, and that should always be indicative of our business model on our blog. News we’re finding about about? Yes, you should know first, but only after we do our due diligence and know that the information that we’re providing on this blog is everything and more that you should know. So, while you think that you’re here to learn only about the foundations of your homes, you’ll leave with so much for.

Back to our original message. The halfway point. Our opportunity to think through what’s gone really well in calendar months one through six, and maybe where we think that we could improve and enhance through the month of December. The sun will be high in the sky by then, as will the smiles on our faces, knowing that we’ve done our best to be partners-in-crime to you. Here’s a look back and a look forward:

Looking Back:

We just keep blinking and time keeps flying. It seems like just yesterday that we were thinking through the best ways to take 2019 to the next level. And we did. Here are some highlights:

  • We got faster. We thought through ways to have the right amount of people onsite, so that we used your space wisely and our time wisely. We never want to have too few, so that the work goes too slowly. We also never want to have too many, which can stress you out during an important project.
  • We continued to encourage sustainability – both in the field and in our offices. There’s no excuse in this day and age to not make the small steps to show up in the right way, and we’re big proponents of this. We’ll continue to be so and hope to spread the word in our industry and our community.
  • We expanded our reach. We are a community company at our core, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting our community to grow. We grow by word-of-mouth, so we give you all of the compliments for this one.

Looking Ahead:

It’s tough to know what the future will hold, but it’s impossible to know if you don’t plan for it. Here’s what we’re thinking:

  • Let’s get creative in our solutions. There’s no reason to remain complacent, just because we know that what we’re doing – works.
  • Let’s continue to communicate with you. And let’s do it in the ways that means the most to you. Email, phone and in person are great… but are they how you’re connecting?

Let’s plan ahead and be ready. Proactive and reactive are both vital for businesses like Restumping Melbourne. Know when you have cracks in your walls, in your ceiling, in the flooring; know when the door doesn’t close properly – you could have or *already do have* foundation damage. Let’s be here for both.

Spotlight on a Quality: Honesty

Spotlight on a Quality: HonestyBusiness success and customer relationships are a puzzle. At least, that’s how the team at Restumping Melbourne feels. There’s no fail-safe way to ensure that you’re going to show up in the best light to your customers and there’s no guarantee that your plan of attack is going to work. As with anything “worth it”, it takes hard work and a lot of perseverance. It takes being told “no” over and over again. It takes being okay with that and knowing that for every “no” you hear, you’re one step closer to a “yes”. We chronicle this journey on our blog, and we do so with total honesty. What better fitting quality within our business ethos to kick off this series with? Know that in the coming weeks, we’re committed to showcasing the best of our business, and most importantly – our team.

What does “honesty” mean to you? If we turn to Webster’s or another dictionary, we’re likely to find a generic definition around simply telling the truth. Sure, that is at the crux of what honesty means to us, but the arenas in which we want to tell said truth are vast and some are surprising. Let’s dive into a few:

We always want to be honest about our processes. We want to be upfront about how long a job will take and exactly the types of roles that will go into it. We’ve talked about this on the blog before, but we never want to be the type of company that tells you one thing when the work kicks off, and something entirely different a week later.

We want to be honest about the different materials that we choose to use. And honest with ourselves when we don’t think that something isn’t working. We’ll talk about this in future posts, but to us, if we don’t keep searching for the greatest and newest, well – we’re becoming complacent. And that’s something that we never want to be in an industry, where you have many options to choose from.

Finally, we want to be honest about feedback. That goes both ways and is the reason that we continue to reiterate how we share your constructive criticism with everyone that we work with. After all, what’s the best way to learn? The reverse is true as well. Anyone that’s working on the foundation of your home, should be seen with the foundation of a true and honest friendship, as well as a partnership. So, if we think that it’s not a good match, we have no problem looking at the other multitude of amazing vendors in the area. It’s also a question of being honest about the services that we offer. We know we’re the best of the best, (and very humble if you couldn’t tell), but we’d be nothing without our partnerships and without you.

Questions? Comments? Please reach out to the Restumping Melbourne team!

The Trade-off Between Affordability and Reliability

The Trade-off Between Affordability and ReliabilityAh, the age-old travesty. That centuries old battle between deciding to pinch pennies and to sacrifice the quality of work. Welcome to the Restumping Melbourne blog! We’re thrilled to have you here, especially as we know just how many options you have in the Melbourne area and beyond. If you’ve already made it to our little site, chances are good that you have a need. Rather, chances are good that your home or business’ foundation has seen better days and has opportunities for improvement. Well, a pat on the back from the Restumping Melbourne team. Your exact need was why our team was formed and your intuition and proactivity to visit the blog mean that you’re headed in the right direction already.

Frequently on this blog, we focus on broader information. We’re passionate about the industry-at-large and the only way that we can continue to be the best in the business and ahead of the game, is by expanding our horizons and knowing the role that we play in turning your house into a safe and comfortable home. So, we’ll scour the internet, we’ll have extensive conversations with each other and with others, we’ll ask the tough questions and we’ll be sure to find the answers. So that when you visit the Restumping Melbourne team or our site or our blog, you’ll leave feeling comfortable and confident – not only with the idea of reinforcing your foundation through our premium restumping, reblocking and underpinning skills – but ready to tackle whatever home renovation or construction project is next on your list.

This is not one of those posts. This is a post specific to the Restumping Melbourne team and our work. While we appreciate our competition, we also know that we are a cut above the other companies in the area and beyond. There are many reasons why but what we want to focus on today is the trade-off between companies that are affordable and those that are reliable.

Here’s the kicker… most of the time, it’s one or the other. When you see low rates that appeal to your wallet, you need to do your research and understand if this is a company that you want to trust with one of your most important assets – your home. When you see five-star ratings, much of the time the prices tend to rise with the number of positive ratings. It’s an unfortunate business model and in the minds of the Restumping Melbourne team members, it simply shouldn’t be the case.

That brings us to the second kicker… here, it’s not one or the other. One of the many reasons that you should choose Restumping Melbourne is that we believe that affordability and reliability are partners-in-crime. They complement each other, and you should never have to choose. Because of our extensive relationships in the industry, we’re able to seek out the best materials and the best resources, so that you have no qualms about deciding that it’s about time to properly reinforce the foundation of your home.

Why Doing it Right Matters

Why Doing it Right MattersWelcome back to the Restumping Melbourne blog! We’re so thrilled to have you here and to share what gets us excited about restumping, reblocking and underpinning your home or business. Unfamiliar with how it works? We invite you to reach out to our team for comprehensive descriptions of our services, but we’ll give you a high-level definition right here. Each of the above are the art of fortifying the foundation of your home. Why does that matter? You may be asking. Your foundation is literally the reason why your home sits in the ground and why it doesn’t go sliding down the street when weather or wind hit. It’s not as simple as levelling the ground and beginning to build. Instead a complicated and important process exists for almost all homes and businesses wherein supports are rooted deeply in the ground.

This may be an eye-opening surprise to you, but today’s post focuses on exactly why it’s important and why it’s essential to do it right. We recently discussed what sets the Restumping Melbourne team apart. If you missed the post, it boils down to two things – experience and customer service. They go hand-in-hand and they’re the root of our business.

That’s not the case for some and that’s why we share a cautionary tale today. More and more, we’re hearing about companies that cut corners. This disappoints us. To put it bluntly, it makes us sad. We value your business and the opportunity to work with you on turning your house into a safe and comfortable home. We know that you have dozens of other options, but it makes sense to pick the Restumping Melbourne team.

Back to the companies that cut corners. When you don’t properly invest in home renovations and updates, the results can be catastrophic. One story in particular comes to mind. Back in 2011, a restumping business owner was trapped under a home while it was being restumped, resulting in more than $40,000 for the business itself. The home fell from the hydraulic jacks that were being used to lift it up, trapping the worker face down and ultimately breaking his pelvis. The structural damage that caused the house to collapse meant that it was eventually demolished. The company faced counts including one count failing to ensure that the public were not exposed to either safety or health risks and one count that the company did not provide a safe workplace.

The two different counts are important here. We care deeply for the safety of our teammates and ensure that each of them goes through strict and extensive training to handle any situation that the day might throw at them. Your health and safety, as our customers, is vital to us too. That’s why we take the time to meet and talk through the entirety of our process and answer every question you may have. You can ask questions about our equipment, about our work, and you can vet our previous experiences with dozens of happy customers.
